HIgh holy day card for Beth Emet The Free Synagogue
Welcome to one of my recent projects. At the request of Beth Emet the Free Synagogue, I had the privilege of designing a special card that embodies the spirit of the High Holy Day. Through the art calligraphy and the incorporation of symbols synonymous with Rosh Hashana holiday.
focusing on the cover design, a captivating story unfolds. The word "ברכה" (meaning "blessing" in Hebrew) takes center stage, creatively shaped like a "shofar," the ancient ram's-horn trumpet used during Jewish ceremonies like Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. Below, the words "may the new year resound in blessing" gracefully curve, highlighting the shofar's form. Adding to this, an elegant one-line drawing features a pomegranate, symbolizing fertility and abundance in Jewish culture. Alongside, a poised honey bee signifies the sweet start of the new year. This design masterfully intertwines traditional symbols and calligraphy with a contemporary approach to design, creating a harmonious blend of the classic and the modern.
Within the card, you'll discover a thoughtful arrangement of words, each embodying well-wishes for the upcoming year, all cleverly commencing with the letter "ב" (bet). These words are elegantly showcased in a classical calligraphy style, drawing inspiration from the sophisticated embellishments often observed in historical scriptures. Accompanying these wishes are simplified yet evocative one-line illustrations depicting symbols like, apples and honey, each carrying their own symbolic weight in the celebration of the holiday.
